A Dabbler's Life for Me

I don't know about you guys, but I have searched my whole life for the one thing that I would be amazing at. I have tried drawing, singing, fashion, baking, cooking, playing violin, piano, dancing, ice skating, sewing, languages, basketball, billiards (OK, I won't lie, I'm out of practice, but I am actually pretty amazing at that one). And yes, I have come back to that sentence about 12 times to add one more thing that I tried out. All of the things.
Turns out, I'm not really amazing at anything. However, I am pretty good at most of them.  (Hint: bowling is not one of them)
I think that most people think that dabblers are people who don't have a passion for anything. I'd argue that we dabblers are not actually passionless, but passionate. I, personally, love so many things. I want to be good at all of them. However, you can't focus all of your energy in 12 places at the same time. I flit from place to place, usually coming back to the same things after awhile.
One thing however, that I do all the time is write. No, I don't write in my journal every day. No I don't write poetry every day. No, I don't write my novels every day. But I do write something everyday. A blog post, a snatch of a poem, a journal entry. Just about everything. I don't even think about it. It's something that I just do. Without realizing it.
I only recently realized that I'm a dabbler. I love it though. So many new experiences. I love them all. Who knows, maybe after a few years of coming back to the same things then I'll be amazing at all of them right?? :)

Waterfall french braid! Made it up! Tutorial to come :)

So Dabblers unite! Try all the things!

It's a Pride Issue

I was planning on doing a post about hiking today, but we kinda got rained out...
Not that I don't love the rain! I do!
But it has been so beautiful lately! Just a little more heat and a little less damp and I would be on that mountain today.
The plan is to get back into hiking shape so that I can hike Mount Olympus this year!  I was planning to hike it last year, but I kind of got out of hiking condition before I was planning to go. Although I did get to go on some beautiful hikes in Zions and Moab :)

Me and my little sis, I wasn't sure we were going to make it to the top! :)

For all of you people out there who hate on hiking, I want to say. I know how you feel.
I have never liked hiking. I have never been a good hiker. For me, it was hard, it was hot, and it was... just really too much effort! Not that the sights weren't beautiful, but really do we have to hike to get there?

Let me promise you though, that hiking is wonderful, once you get past all the pain. Once you're in good enough shape to actually enjoy all those beautiful little details that you miss when you're huffing and puffing and feeling your heartbeat in your hips (seriously the weirdest feeling).

Then I dated a boy who wanted to climb mount Olympus. It got postponed a few times, but it didn't sound like it would be that hard. I was in pretty good shape that summer, playing ultimate Frisbee, and finally started running a few times a week.

Guess what? I didn't make it to the top.

We hiked and hiked and if you didn't know that hike is WICKED steep. Steep and it was in August, August. I didn't bring enough water. My legs were shaking so hard that I didn't think that they would hold me up!

We were fifteen minutes from the top when I broke out in tears. I just couldn't do it. My legs couldn't take it. My heart couldn't take it. I was completely defeated.

I thought about what it would be like to be life-flighted from the mountain.

But I made it off.

I stumbled and ran my way down that mountain and stopped at every shady patch no matter how small. We were less than 20 minutes from the car and there was this big shady tree.

We laid there underneath it and I thought I might be content to never leave. Just feel the light breeze and die right there.

Finally we made the last stretch.

We made it off the mountain, and I am going to make it to the top.

So I'll find another hiking buddy for the weeks that it just doesn't work with my dearest Hatred (don't worry, it's a term of endearment).

What's your favorite hike? Or, do you hate hiking altogether?

For the Love of Books: March Must Reads

I don't know about you guys, but there are a few books that I read every year. Or, nearly every year. This series is one that I read every March.
I found these books like I find most of my books, by picking random books off the shelves. Well, not totally randomly, I look at the covers and put ones that look interesting in my bag.
Confession: I rarely leave the library with less than 15 books in my bag.
I could literally live in the library.

These books are my favorite kind of series. They all connect together, but they can be read as stand alones without completely confusing you. I have this habit of reading series out of order (mostly because I pick random books off the shelves...), so when I can read and don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to know what's going on, I like that :)
Plus, it's a nice little bit of magic for my favorite holiday :)
I started with The Summer King even though it's technically the second book in the series. Who knows what happened to The Hunter's Moon I had that once upon a time.

Do you read any books every year? Why those ones?

Love,
Rae

Tyler Style Jazz Games

Last night my little sister and I went to a Jazz Game. And let me tell you... It was close! We won by 1 point! (89-88) We got tickets at Christmas and it was my little sister's first time really going to a game that wasn't in the nosebleeds/when she was older than 10 years old. I was really worried that she wasn't going to like it, after all, she's not really into sports... like at all. At least watching them.
But, we did things Tyler style and started off with Apollo Burger. Just so you know, Tyler style Jazz times include dinner (most likely Apollo Burger), the game, and then Slurpees after it's all said and done!
Charissa (My little sister) and I usually have Apollo burger on special occasions and celebrations (first time I ever hit 100 page views, when I hit 50000 words in NaNoWriMo, when I did 5 years of Nano in a row...) and if you ask me, this totally counted as a Celebration!
We got downtown really early for good parking and so we walked around City Creek!

 Rocking the Ariel Hat!
The game was amazing! I won't lie, I was kind of hoping that it would be a close game since those are the most fun! It was REALLY close! By the end Charissa and I were both screaming and jumping up and down, chanting things like, "Two threes, two threes!"
We screamed so much at the game that even if we weren't doing things Tyler Style, drinks of some sort would have been necessary! But we were doing things Tyler Style and we just couldn't pass up Dunford Chocolate chocolate donuts!

Overall, a fantastic night!

What about you? Do you have any celebration rituals? Or, things you always do when you go to a game?

Hope you all had a fantastic weekend too!

"Lucky you" mint pie!

I have a lot of St. Patrick's day traditions, mostly because St. Patrick's day is my favorite holiday (as mentioned in my first post). One of them is this pie.

"Lucky You" mint pie. It has become tradition for 4 years now. It's both St. Patricksy (let's just pretend that's a word...) and Pi day-y day-ie  day...ee (yeah, there's no good way to type that). Every year I am amazed how tasty it is! I really don't know how I forget that.

Tell me you don't want to eat that!

Here is the recipe Lucky you Mint Pie
The secret of the awesomeness is the chocolate ganache. By itself, it doesn't taste super amazing, but mixed all together it's a little bit of heaven!
I may or may not have eaten most of this pie by myself... these are the consequences of having a family that is more heath conscious than I am. I must say, they aren't the worst consequences ever :)
Let me know if you try it! It's pretty simple!

Is there anything you always eat at St. Patrick's day?

French Toast and No time

Sometimes I sleep in longer than I intended and then act like I have all the time in the world. Like not getting dressed and it's 10:07 and I have to be out the door in 30 minutes... and making french toast sticks while planning blog posts...
You know, the usual!

Just FYI nutella on french toast sticks was not as delicious as I was hoping for... but still good.

Ready for the non-recipe recipe?

1 egg
milk
splash of vanilla
bread (I used cinnamon burst)

Cut your bread into strips, dip both sides in the batter and cook in a pan over medium heat! I cooked mine in avocado oil and it was great!

Surprisingly fast too! I wasn't even late for work! ;)

I like to take my breakfast seriously when I have the time. French toast, crepes, egg sandwiches... Cereal is my last resort if I'm in a hurry.

What about you? What's your go to breakfast? Or, what's your favorite breakfast and why?
If you have any amazing recipes send them my way! :)

Crashing the Party

So last night I went to The Living Planet Aquarium. The place isn't even open yet, but I had a friend that was having their reception there.
Admittedly, I haven't seen this friend in over 4 years. Admittedly, we were never really close. He lived in my ward (basically LDS slang for they lived in the neighborhood and I saw him on Sundays), but when I saw that he was having his reception at the Living Planet Aquarium, it wasn't even a choice! I had to go.
I took my little sister with me. Basically it was the coolest thing EVER. I'm telling you, once that place opens up for real (March 25th :) ), you need to go! It's like the zoo, only aquarium style. I don't know about you, but I LOVE the zoo. And considering that I almost went into Marine Biology, aquariums are right up my alley.

Charissa made friends with this little guy in the shark tube :)

See! It's huge! You know you want to go!

Pardon the poor quality phone photos... Apparently I don't think about bringing a camera when I'm semi-crashing a reception.
So what about you? Have you ever crashed a party? Or, a reception?
If you head to the aquarium, drop me a line and we can geek out together about how sweet it is! :)

Welcome to the Party :)

First off, happy St. Patrick's day!
This is officially my favorite holiday. I'm not really sure why, something about magic I think. That and the delicious corned beef and cabbage that we have every year for dinner. Now before you go telling me that they don't actually eat that in Ireland, let me just say I know. Or at least, that's what I read in an article today :) (We may or may not eat it at thanksgiving too instead of turkey... don't judge!)
I figured that it was time to let this idea that's been rolling around in my head out! And what a better day to do it than today??

A few random facts about me:

  • I love the food network
  • I take pretty much any chance I can get to celebrate, big or small
  • I love hiking
  • I'd rather have a Monday off than a Friday
  • My dog's name is Soleil
  • Blue and pink are my favorite colors
So if you're wondering what this blog will be about, expect a little bit of everything. I love adventures and learning and trying new things. To borrow a popular phrase, welcome to my life :)
