Monday Moments

Happy Monday!

How is everyone doing? I'm still hanging in there. You'll all be happy to know I was able to get into the dentist. The bad news is that my tooth hasn't stopped hurting since it was fixed... Ironically it didn't hurt at all before it was fixed.
Go figure...

We made Twice baked potatoes on Tuesday. We had them at the Captain's grandparent's house on Sunday and they were SO good that we had to try and make them ourselves! They weren't quite as delicious, but I'd say that they were pretty good for a first attempt!

We found a new sushi place!!! Ever since our last one was sold to a Mexican couple, we've been missing it. So when we went out on a double date on Friday and they picked Fat Fish I was feeling a little reluctant.
For those of you who don't know me, I have a very small mouth. As in, I can't open my mouth very wide. I attribute my dislike of sandwiches, corn on the cob, and dentists to the fact that I can't open my mouth as wide as I need to for each of these things.
So when I eat sushi it's kind of a disaster. There is no way for me to fit a whole roll in my mouth for one bite, so it ends up getting completely destroyed. I always worry that I'm offending the people who have taken the time to make the beautiful rolls that I'm eating. Then I realized that I was going to be letting the Captain's friends watch me destroy sushi.
BUT, their rolls were mostly small enough that I could fit them in my mouth! I know that sounds totally trivial but it was a huge selling point for me! Not to mention that all the rolls we tried were delicious. I highly recommend them.

The Captain and I went for a drive up the canyon for our date last week. It was so beautiful to see the snow covered trees. I'd definitely recommend this as a cheap date for anyone! Maybe take some hot chocolate along. We stopped just this once along the way to take pictures.

I made this petite watercolor wreath on Sunday. I love having church early so that we can spend so much time together in the afternoons.

Monday Moments | Hanging in there

Frankly, this last week has sucked.

The Captain lost his job earlier this month and I was all, this is fine. This is cool. We'll be fine.
Then last Friday I broke a filling or a tooth or something.
I've been anxious and worried about it ever since then.
Of course, it happened right after business hours were over on Friday night.
And of course, Dentists aren't generally open on the weekends.
So I told myself to calm down and everything would be ok, all I needed to do was to hang on till Monday.

Then I found out that my old dentist doesn't take my insurance that is only good for the rest of the month.
My dear husband found me an appointment... for Thursday.

So I'm hanging in there for a few more days.
I'm not so good at hanging in there.

I'm loving this journal. I've been pretty good at keeping up my journal this year. It may also be a fair bit of complaining about the year so far and convincing myself to look on the bright side.

I accidently dyed my paint brush rainbow colors while playing with my new paints. I'm pretty OK with it.

Monday Moments

Well, this has already turned out to be a doozy of a year! We got back from Florida not much longer than a week ago and since then we've already had so many things happen.
The main one being the Captain losing his job.
When he told me, I felt like I was having flashbacks to when we were getting married and he lost his job like a week before we got married.
This time we've both felt pretty good about it though. He wasn't really loving where he was working anyway and there have already been a few opportunities popping up. Fingers crossed that one of them pulls through! :)

I tried to get into a car that was identical to mine grocery shopping this week. Luckily I didn't set off any alarms or anything.

I had some free time to mess around with my watercolors this week. I still feel so cool using tube watercolors... I also feel like I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing ha ha. I should probably look up a tutorial or something.
On this day I was also thinking about how I used to be such a tidy person. Everything neatly put away (even if there was maybe more clutter than I should have had). These days it's more like this picture, things spilling out everywhere, messes like this one left out to come back to later. I kind of beautiful chaos.
I kind of love it.
I also kind of miss those days when I seemed to be able to put things away.

I have been gotten pretty good at journaling so far this year! I'm hoping to keep it up.  I got this journal from my sweet mother-in-law because she said she saw it and thought of me. I love those kinds of gifts! It was also funny because I later realized that this journal is produced by one of the hand-letterers that I follow on Instagram!

-Workout/run 5xs this week
-Write 5xs this week
-Plan a cheap stay at home date!
-Go to the Temple with the Captain
-Go grocery shopping/ find a way to eat healthy, and CHEAP
-Do something fun with my days off :)

Good! Not what I was expecting. Much more scientific than I thought, but still good.

Princess of the Silver Woods By Jessica Day George

So far so good!

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet By Jamie Ford

This book is really interesting and good so far! It's about a Chinese boy living in America during the second world war who befriends a Japanese girl. She's taken to an internment camp. It flips between this time and about 40 years later. I would recommend it so far.

I hope you've had a good week! Thanks for reading! I'm so grateful for all of you, even if I don't know who all of you are! I'd love to know more about you, feel free to drop me a line in the comments!

New Year Goals | Progression, Not Perfection

I thought about titling this post something like "New Year, New You?" but ultimately decided that straightforward is best.

I realize that we are about two weeks into the New Year, which means that if you made goals there's a fairly good chance that you aren't doing so well at them, or maybe you didn't make any at all because you knew that you wouldn't keep them. Maybe you threw in the towel on New Years Goals years ago.

I'm here to say that I get that. I get being frustrated that you didn't do quite what you wanted to do, or you flat out failed at keeping your goals. Possibly you've made the same goals for years and you keep failing at them.

While it's very tempting to just quit or not make any goals, especially when you see yourself falling short of what you would like to accomplish.

I think that a lot of people get confused about what goals are for. At least in my mind, goals are made for progression, NOT perfection

If you make a goal that you will go to the gym every day of 2017, and then by the end of the first few weeks you've missed a day here and there because things got crazy, or you didn't feel like it, or whatever the reason, that's ok! If you continue with that goal, maybe missing days here and there for the rest of the year, maybe even occasionally missing a week or two here or there, you're still moving forward. You still get the benefits of all the days that you did go. Just because you missed a day and didn't reach the "perfection" of your goal, doesn't mean that it nullifies the success of all the days you made it to the gym (or whatever your goal is).

So keep going! You've got this!

Monday Moments

Long time no see! I was actually planning to still blog over Christmas Break... but it obviously didn't happen. I didn't really want to worry about it and I'm not really sad that I didn't. We went out to Florida to visit the Captain's family and even went on a vacation within a vacation to New Orleans for New Years. Actually, we went there since the Captain's little brother was performing in the Sugar Bowl. We didn't attend that since the tickets were really expensive!

My hair always gets crazy in Florida. I feel a little bit like Monica from that episode of Friends where her hair just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

This was Christmas Eve Morning. We went out to see the Surfing Santas. It was pretty fun. The most exciting part was when three guys jumped out of a helicopter into the ocean. Also, it was much warmer than we were expecting. We all got pretty hot.

My first meal at Cracker Barrel. The salad was actually pretty good, but nothing could beat their biscuits! I swear they were submerged in melted butter or something before they brought them out to us.

This was in Sea World. I didn't take a whole lot of pictures. I love Sea World, but I just wanted to enjoy the day and watch the shows without worrying about getting the perfect shot.

We had the chance to head out to the Orlando Temple with the Captain's family and do a session. It was so pretty to see the nativity with all that sunshine!

Chuy's after the temple. This meal was called Chicka Chicka Boom Boom enchiladas. Clearly, with a name like that, I had to try it :)

My sweet husband painted my nails for me. He was very particular about making sure that they were perfect, without any paint on the edges.

Played with my brand new watercolors! I'm pretty excited about them. Now I just need to compile a list of quotes to play around with.

My first Po' Boy in New Orleans at Parkway Bakery and Tavern. Honestly, I wasn't very impressed. Possibly it was just the kind of sandwich we got (this sandwich was GIANT. I didn't even eat a quarter of it).

We, of course, had to try beignets! We got these from Cafe Du Monde. Apparently, it's a famous place? I wasn't overly impressed with the beignets. I mean they were good, but they weren't AMAZING. They were pretty good dipped in hot chocolate, though!

We also went to the New Orleans City Park which is apparently bigger than Central Park. We only went through a little bit of it, but it was really cool to see the different sculptures. It made me feel like we were in outdoor art gallery.

This was the day that we came home from Florida. I can't say that I regret going to the beach, but I will say it was quite the shock to go from this to single digit temperatures in one day.

The Selection  By Kiera Cass
The Elite By Kiera Cass
The One By Kiera Cass

I liked these! There are some make-out scenes, but it was good!

The Chemist By Stephenie Meyer

This is Stephenie Meyer's new book! I got it for Christmas and I just finished it a day or two ago. I really liked it. Not as much as I liked The Host but I still liked it a lot. This also has a few scenes that you might want to skip, but other than that there is almost no swearing!

Liar and Spy By Rebecca Stead

It's a good quick read. Totally clean :)

The Heir By Kiera Cass

I liked this one. It's separate from the rest of them for two reasons. One, I read it after I drafted this post, and second, because it's a different main character.

I'm going to skip the to-dos and goals this week since I'll be doing a post on New Year's Resolutions in a few days!
