Telling the Husband

I wasn't sure what I wanted to share today, or if I wanted to share anything today, but then I remembered this video. This is the day we found out that we were pregnant. I had been looking at things all day to try and find a cute way of telling Brian, but none of the ways that I found seemed to really work. They would require me to go out and buy something or wait several weeks to tell him (which I knew I couldn't do.)

To put this in perspective, when I started googling all these ideas and things, I wasn't even sure that I was pregnant yet. I hadn't taken any tests, I just knew that I was. Technically I was a day or two late, but that was going off an app that had predicted a shorter cycle than normal, so I was still within normal range, yet I was pretty positive for days before I took the test.

On the day we found out I decided that I was finally going to just take a test and find out one way or another. We had a few pregnancy tests at home, but I wanted a "real" test. You know, the ones that say "pregnant" or something. So I decided that after work I would go to the store and buy one, I had this crazy idea that I would take the test at the library (why I thought it would be fun to find out in public, I don't really know...) and then afterward I would go pick up Brian from work.

Well, I went to the store and quickly discovered that I would have to buy the test from the pharmacy. I was too much of a coward to do that. I had been planning to buy the test using self-check out! So I got into my car and drove home. I dug the pregnancy test out from under the bed and discovered that the test expired that month. I used it anyway.

I set the timer for three minutes like it said and walked away. I got on Facebook and tried not to freak out about what the test might say. The timer went off and I walked back to the bathroom.

Two pink lines.

Suddenly I was shaking and saying out loud to myself "Oh my goodness, oh my goodness." But naturally, I couldn't trust the test because it was expired, right? We had another newer test. So I decided to take it again. I set the timer and walked away again, still freaking out from the first test. When I came back... two pink lines.

We were pregnant.

I knew that I couldn't keep this from Brian for any length of time so I wrote out "Oh baby" on a little red card and pulled the cheesecake from our wedding out from the freezer. We'd decided that we would eat it when we found out we were pregnant about a month before, so I knew he would know what it meant. I put the cheesecake and the note and the positive tests (in a baggie for sanitary reasons) in the fridge and focused on not shaking too much. Then I had to wait out the time until I needed to go get Brian.

I showed up to his work, bursting to tell him, but wanting to surprise him and film his reaction so trying to play it cool. Of course on this day he needed to stay an extra 15-20 minutes to finish something. His boss asked me if it was ok and I was like, "Oh yeah, no problem." While secretly dying a little bit inside. Then we drove home and I was gearing up to film him, but of course, we also needed to go get the mail first.

And of course, he got a letter from his little sister on a mission. So when we got back to our apartment I started filming as soon as we got in the door, but realized this was futile as he went to the table and started reading the letter. Now, I love his little sister, but I was imploding, he needed to go to the fridge. I tried making a few comments that would lead him to go check the fridge. He didn't. after he finished reading the letter he went to the room to go change.

At this point, my patience was gone. I didn't even care if it was a surprise anymore, he needed to look in the fridge and he needed to do it right now. So I set myself up on the counter and started filming. I called him and told him to come into the kitchen. Then I said, "Look at the fridge." he started looking around the fridge. "No, no look IN the fridge." he somewhat apprehensively opened the fridge and finally he knew!

He hugged me and told me that he had thought that there was a mouse in the fridge or something. He told himself not to freak out if he saw something moving in there. Afterward, we went out to Chipotle for dinner to celebrate.

I'm curious, if you've been pregnant, how did you find out? How did you tell your partner?

Thanks for reading! I've been overwhelmed by the support you've all given us, so thank you!
